Three poets qualify for Katara Prize cash prizes worth QR4.2 million

Three poets have won in the second qualifying round in the Classical Poetry category of the fourth edition of the Katara Prize for Prophet's Poet held at Katara Cultural Village on Wednesday. The three winners were selected from a total of five contestants.

The winners are Alsayed Abou El Wafa (Egypt), Hassan Aamer (Egypt) and Mohamed Oraij (Morocco).

The Katara Prize for Prophet's Poet is held in two categories: the Classical Poetry and Colloquial Poetry. The second round in the Colloquial Poetry category will be held on Thursday, from which three winners out of five will be selected.

The closing ceremony will be held on Friday, 27 September, at 8:00pm at the Opera House at the Katara Cultural Village. Three winners from the Classical Poetry category and three winners from Colloquial Poetry will be announced at the function. The first winner from each category will be crowned the title of the Poet of the Prophet for 2019. Members of the public can attend the closing ceremony.

The prestigious Katara Prize for Prophet's Poet carries cash prizes worth a total of QR4.2m. The first prize winner in each category will get a cash prize of QR1m while winners of the second and third positions will get QR700,000 and QR400,000, respectively.

The 30 shortlisted poems, which entered the final round, will be published by Katara Publishing House in a book. It will also be made available in CD format. The sponsors of the Prize are Qatar TV (media sponsor), Ministry of Endowment and Islamic Affairs, Masraf Al Rayan, and Rasool Channel.
