We've been seeing a lot of Dr. Abdullatif Mohamed Al Khal ever since the coronavirus (COVID-19) made its way to Qatar. We've seen him in the press conferences to discuss the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Qatar, the measures taken, the precautions we should all take, and all the latest updates related to the virus, but how much do we all really know him?
This 'Who's Who in Qatar' will focus on Dr. Abdullah Al Khal, who he is and why he's a prominent figure in Qatar.
At present, he's the Chairman of the National Strategic Group on COVID-19, but he also plays very important roles as Head of the Infectious Diseases Division at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and is Senior Consultant in Infectious Diseases.
Along with these roles, he is also the Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Director of the HMC's Department of Medical Education, Manager of Qatar’s National Tuberculosis Programme, and Director of Qatar’s Clinical AIDS Programme.
Dr. Abdullah Al Khal graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland with a MBBCd. He completed his residency and fellowship training in Connecticut (USA), and is American Board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.
In addition to his clinical roles, Dr. Abdullah Al Khal serves in an advisory role to several Ministry of Public Health's public health programmes. He held a faculty appointment as Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine - Qatar (2007- 2020), and was promoted to Professor of Clinical Medicine in February 2020. He also holds the title of Clinical Professor of Medicine at Qatar University’s College of Medicine and is the College’s founding Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.
He also remains active in research, writes and publishes regularly with his interests spanning the fields of internal medicine, infectious disease, pharmacology and medical education.
Dr. Abdullah Al Khal is the first-ever recipient of the prestigious 'ACGME-I Physician International Award' which honours individuals who have made outstanding contributions towards ensuring and improving the quality of graduate medical education for physicians in training.
Dr. Abdullah Al Khal received the award in March 2018 because he has been the driving force behind HMC's efforts to ensure its residents and fellows receive the training and education needed to provide their patients with the very best care.
