The central markets in Qatar have been around for years; however, in recent times, they've been regulated by Hassad Food via a subsidiary known as 'ASWAQ'. The regulatory changes also led to the re-location of the markets to central points around Doha.
Currently, three main central markets are operational, which are:
The ILoveQatar.net (ILQ) team is here to help you find your way around the central markets and tell you what to find where.
The Al Sailiya Central Market is vast and holds 52 traditional shops, 102 retail shops and 50 wholesale vendors.
The famously known fruit & vegetable wholesale market can be found within the Al Sailiya Central Market, along with many other items such as dates, nuts and other dry fruits.
Traditional cooking ingredients like dry black lemon and spices can also be bought at the market.
Aside from food-related items, the traditional markets section of Aswaq Sailiya sells classics like clay water pots, bukhoor pots, traditional barbecue equipment, logs for bonfires, and hand-woven jute baskets and more.
You could even find gardening equipment, household plants and other such items.
Located within the Wakra Central Market is Qatar's main Livestock market (livestock central market). Along with the livestock market, it also houses Qatar's main automated slaughterhouse.
The Wakra central market sells all necessary supplies for livestock that a producer, trader or consumer would need, such as fodder, grain, etc., which is accommodated by a total of 102 shops.
Just as it is across other central markets, Aswaq Wakra also houses an additional 76 shops that sell fruits, vegetables, dry fruits and more.
The famous fish market previously located in Abu Hamour, has become a part of the Umm Salal Central Market.
While the numerous fish vendors take over this central market, there are other items available for sale: dry cooking ingredients, fruits & vegetables.
You would also be able to find on-site a dates market, livestock sale and a convenient slaughterhouse.
Aside from the mentioned vendors, all the central markers have supermarkets and cafeterias on-ground to ensure shoppers' needs are met.
