The Ramada Plaza will celebrate today the Japanese traditional festival Seijin Shiki, or the Coming-of-Age Day.

The Seijin Shiki, which will be held at the Ramada Plaza’s Japanese restaurant and will be attended by Japanese Ambassador Yukio Kitazume, is a festival to celebrate a Japanese passage into adulthood.

“In Japan, the age of maturity is 20. Japanese youth reaching this age during the current school year are invited to take part in the ceremony, which will be attended by Japanese government officials who will give the newly proclaimed adults presents and speeches,” said Joy Villanueva, Ramada Plaza’s food and beverage secretary and event organiser.

Japanese women celebrate this day by wearing a furisode, a formal style of kimono worn by unmarried women in Japan. It is made of very fine, brightly coloured silk and is commonly rented or bought by parents for their daughters to wear when celebrating Coming-of-Age Day. Wearing a furisode signifies that a young woman is both single, a legal adult and is available for marriage. Men on this day usually wear the hakama or some just wear business suits.

“A number of other Japanese executives are also attending the event. This is a ceremony that most young Japanese people look forward to in Japan, and we are the only hotel celebrating this here in Doha,” said Villanueva.
