Food platters are such a simple way to prepare a tasty, appetising feast during Eid. I love food platters because there is no cooking involved, it’s easy to whip up in little time and there are lots of delicious ingredients to choose from. You can create a large platter for the family or a mini version for just one or two people.

To begin – Find a suitable plate or platter. Make a list of ingredients to suit your taste buds – from sweet and savoury to spicy and salty. It’s important to mix and match with a variety of textures and flavours.

Next is the fun part! Choose a food theme that you love. A theme will help pull the whole platter together visually and taste-wise. Here are a few ideas - fruit, nut and cheese platter, dessert platter, mezze platter or cold cuts platter.

Then select lots of different colours and shapes to add interest to your plate. Create slices and wedges of fruit, chunks of cheese, folded slices of meat. Cookie cutters are great for creating stars and moon shapes. Or use a small knife to create your own shape.

Be sure to prepare the ingredients in bite sizes to pick up easily. Different size serving bowls or containers are perfect for separating wet or soft ingredients such as cheese or dips. Start by arranging the larger items onto the platter followed by the container items. Next, add the smaller items of food and then fill in any gaps or spaces with leftover items.

For my fruit, nut and dip platter in the photo shown above, I've used the following ingredients:

  • Mixed fruit –orange, limes, pomegranate, strawberries, blueberries, kiwi fruit, mango
  • Dried fruit – apricots
  • Mixed nuts
  • Dip – spiced hummus with chilli
  • Flatbread

The possibilities are endless. Get creative and have some fun in the kitchen!

Have a blessed Eid everyone!
