The Qatari handball team defeated its Chinese counterpart with a score of 34/25 in its first match in the Asian men’s handball qualifiers for the 33rd Summer Olympic Games (Paris 2024), whose competitions began on 18 October 2023 at the Duhail Sports Hall and will continue until 28 October 2023.
The Qatari team made a strong showing, as it succeeded in ending the first half with a four-goal lead, 17/13, before continuing its superiority in the second half, moving further away in the score, finally clinching the victory in its favour by a nine-goal margin and achieving its first victory in the qualifiers.
The Qatari team will meet in the second round of the first group on 19 October 2023 with the Indian team, which lost its first match earlier today to the Saudi team with a score of 17/46.
Only the first-place finisher in the qualifiers qualifies for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, while the runner-up qualifies for a playoff spot next March.
The Qatari team is looking forward to obtaining a qualification card for the Olympic Games for the second time, after having qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil, for the first time in the history of Qatari handball, after obtaining first place in the qualifiers that were also held in Doha in 2015.
11 teams will participate in the Asian men's handball qualifiers for the 33rd Summer Olympic Games (Paris 2024) held in Doha, distributed into two groups. The first group includes the teams of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the Emirates, India and China, while the second group includes the teams of Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Japan and Kazakhstan. .
The first and second of each group qualify for the semi-finals, which will be held on the 26th of October, in which the first of the first group will meet the second of the second group, and the first of the second group will meet the second of the first group, with the two winners qualifying for the final match on the 28th of the same month for the ticket. Qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
It is noteworthy that this is the third time in a row that Qatar has hosted the Asian men's handball qualifiers for the Olympic Games, as in 2015 it hosted the Rio 2016 Olympic qualifiers, and in 2019 it hosted the Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifiers.
