Lighting the Torch 2013
Aspire Zone Foundation has put the final touches on its preparations for National Sport Day on Tuesday February 11th. Aspire Zone Foundation will provide over 14 different sports activities through Aspire Academy, Aspetar Hospital and Aspire Logistics, to encourage people to be more active. Thousands of residents are expected to flock to Aspire Zone facilities to participate in a range of fun filled and healthy activities. Mr. Khaled Abdullah al Sulaiteen, Chief executive officerof Aspire Zone Foundation, said, “Dedicating a day to celebrate sports is a wise and visionary move by the leadership of Qatar. It reflects faith in sports to build and sustain a healthy society. This day also presents us with an opportunity to communicate and interact with residents in order to encourage them to join our regular programs that promote a healthy lifestyle. Our main priority is to spread awareness about the benefits of healthy living and to provide all residents in Qatar with the tools they need to adopt a healthy lifestyle”. This year, Aspire Zone is set to kick off National Sport Day festivities in spectacular fashion with its “Lighting the Torch” event. Dozens of local sports stars will pedal stationary bicycles, situated outside the Torch-Doha Hotel, in order to generate enough power to light the iconic building. Other activities will begin at 8am with a woman only session for the Aspire Active program. Then from 9am it is fitness fun for all the family with a structured workout that is suitable for any fitness level. Also starting at 9am is the 5-a-side football tournament with two competitions open to the public. These are a competition tournament for the clubs generation of 2006 and 2007, and a social tournament for the fathers of those players. Aspire Academy is also organizing a competition between mothers and daughters and between fathers and sons in gymnastics, tennis and other games in the gymnastics and squash hall. From 10am the indoor athletic track at the Academy Sport Science Department will be conducting a series of physical tests designed to measure athletic performance. These will include timed sprints, high jumping and throwing speed. All participants will be provided with a record of their personal scores and will be able to compare them to the performances of world champions as well as ASPIRE athletes. In addition, the Life Development Program (LDP) at Aspire Academy is presenting four different games designed for boys and girls over 12-years-old that promote values such as teamwork, focus, communication, responsibility, fun, challenge and respect. Youngsters will also get an opportunity to try wall climbing. The Fun Run Race, organized by Aspire Logistics, is one of the day’s most popular events and will start at the Khalifa International Stadium at 9am. More than two thousand people participated in last year’s Fun Run that covers a distance of four kilometers around the Aspire Zone facilities. Runners are asked to register before the event on the website and Aspire giveaways will be distributed at the end of the race. Aspire Logistics is also organizing a beach volleyball tournament on the sand pitch. Six to eight teams will participate with Aspire giveaways provided at the end of the games. In addition, Qatar American Football League will hold a tournament on pitch 11 with six, male-only teams. Finally, the Healthy Lifestyle department of Aspetar will invite everyone to ‘Step Into Health’ through their program that promotes walking five thousands steps. This will take place near the Torch Hotel area and end at the dome exit. Over 27 governmental and private organizations will be taking part in the National Sport Day activities at Aspire’s facilities this year. One of the main events will be the Koora Time World Cup, organized by Qatar Shell in collaboration with the Qatar Football Association. Forty-eight teams will compete in a 5-a-side football match which is expected to run for eight hours until the winning team are crowned champions. Companies joining in the celebrations at Aspire include RasGas, Qatar TV, Ministry of Energy and Industry, General Retirement and Social Security, Qatar Cycling Federation, Qatar Development Bank, HMC Organs Donation Center, Civil Defense, Qatar Enterprise, ictQATAR, National Human Right Committee, and Carrefour. - ILQ News -
