The Traffic and Patrolling Department (TPD) and Internal Security Force (Lekhwya) have launched an intensified joint traffic campaign in Doha city and its suburbs to ensure that the provisions of the traffic law and traffic safety measures are fulfilled by motorists. The campaign which is part of TPD's efforts to secure safe driving on public roads, is conducted by coordinating with all concerned security departments based on a geographical basis. Col Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Thani, (pictured) TPD's Assistant Director, stated that the objective of the campaign is to achieve traffic safety on public roads and ensure that the provisions of the traffic law No. 19 of the year 2007 are properly implemented. It also aims to curb traffic violations and behaviors contrary to the spirit of traffic law which can endanger individual and public properties as well as the lives of both pedestrians and motorists. Al Thani pointed out that the department has selected this particular timing for conducting the campaign as this period witnesses relative calm because of school and summer vacations. The department stops the campaign during the rush hours so as to avoid traffic jam on the roads. Vehicles that fall to meet the provisions stipulated by the traffic law or traffic safety measures shall be seized by the patrolling squads. For the success of the campaign and to eradicate bad habits on public roads, the official urged motorists to cooperate with the members of the traffic campaign. On the other hand, Al Mahmoud, Chief Assistant of patrols and parades at Lekhwya, noted that the major violations detected till now are not using seat belts, using mobile phones while driving, overloading of vehicles and using damaged car plates.
