Doha Players is bringing to Doha Frank Baum’s classic musical The Wizard of OZ which many readers will know from the 1939 film starring Judy Garland. This Doha Players production is led by Angela Walton who has directed many musicals during her time in Doha including The Sound of Music, Oliver!, Annie, The King & I, Grease and Miss Saigon. The Wizard of OZ tells the story of a young girl named Dorothy (Katie Potter) and her little dog Toto (Henry) who are carried off inside their Kansas farmhouse by a tornado and dropped in the magical Land of OZ. There they meet the little people of the land, the Munchkins, and the Good Witch of the North, Glinda (Samantha McGill). Glinda informs Dorothy that her house has landed on the Wicked Witch of the East and killed her. The Wicked Witch of the West (Michele Hussey) then appears and vows revenge against Dorothy for killing her sister. The story follows Dorothy as she tries to get home to Kansas. Along the way she meets three companions: the Scarecrow (Bruce Cross), the Tinman (Don Rikley), and the Cowardly Lion (Mark Slade). They eventually arrive in the Emerald City where they encounter the Wizard (David Pearson). The musical is anchored by the marvelous performance of Katie Potter who, though only 16, gives as professional a performance as you will find on any stage in London or New York. The other actors are also well cast. The show runs March 14 to 24. Tickets on sale at THE One in Villaggio and Landmark malls.
