The Schools Olympic Day, an initiative by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, has inspired young girls to participate in sport. QOC has a thriving sports development programme. Currently, thousands of young girls compete in the Schools Olympic Day programme. “The Schools Olympic Day programme is developing a whole new generation of young female athletes, who we hope to see on the world stage one day. I am impressed by their dedication to sports and I am sure it will enhance the nation’s involvement and performance in future international competitions,” said Khaleel Al Jabir, Director Sports Affair Department at QOC. QOC is encouraging more women to compete within sports and has announced a number of initiatives for female athletes. The Qatar Women Sports Committee was launched back in 2001 by H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, and the Schools Olympic Day is an important sports platform for young girls in Qatar. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=February2009&file=Local_News200902166429.xml
