SEVEN students from Qatar University have been selected to attend the 2008 Student Leader Programme in the US, organised by the Middle East Partnership Initiative. Khalid al-Salahi and Manal al-Taweel (College of Engineering), Khadeja Abu-Al-Fain and Mohamed Nafez Sheldam (College of Business) and Fahad al-Marri, Sara al-Sulaiti and Al Johara al-Jefairi (College of Arts and Sciences) will take part in the 6-week programme which will host 110 students. The programme provides fully-funded scholarships every summer to students from the Middle East and North Africa to visit top US universities to learn about their fellow participants from across the Arab world, as well as the people and culture of the US. The visit will begin in Washington, DC with a 3-day programme at Georgetown University. Participants will meet with US students, senior government officials, Arab-American non-governmental organisations and visit famous museums and cultural institutions. The students will be sent to six prominent American universities, where they will pursue an open examination of the US, with the view to addressing conflicting cultural stereotypes and national preconceptions.
