Qatari social media enthusiasts have launched a campaign on Twitter urging fellow citizens not to travel to the UK this summer as a show of protest against reports appearing in a section of the British media questioning Qatar’s right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The boycott call has gone viral on Arab social media, with many describing the negative media campaign against Qatar as a manifestation of the racist nature of the British democracy, Al Sharq reported.

Ilham Badr, a prominent Qatari woman media personality, on her Twitter account urged Qataris and all those who love Qatar to avoid travelling to the UK this summer and look for “other beautiful cities that are not racist and whose governments are not defaming our country.” Racism in Britain is targeting not only Qatar but all Arabs, she added.

Another media personality, Jabir Al Merri, tweeted, “Racism against the Arabs has surfaced after one of the Arab countries proved that it is capable to host the World Cup”.

“No doubt they will fail. All the world is against their racism and is supporting us. FIFA will not kneel down to their media campaign,” wrote Hamad Al Qahtani.

Meanwhile, a survey of Arab youth has found that more than 60 percent of youth in GCC countries and 57 percent in non-GCC Arab countries believe Qatar is the right choice to host the 2022 World Cup.
