Qatar Museums celebrates International Museum Day with inspirational seminar

In celebration of worldwide International Museum Day, Qatar Museums hosted a public seminar at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) on Monday, under this year’s theme “Museums for a sustainable society.”

The event celebrated Qatar’s cultural institutions and heritage sites and the role they play in supporting human development and the Qatar Nation Vision 2030. Speakers from Qatar Museums, UNESCO and Qatar National Committee delivered a series of inspirational talks focused on the important role that museums play in the development of a sustainable society.

Commenting on the event, Nasser al-Hammadi, curator and heritage expert at Qatar Museums said:

“Qatar Museums is delighted to once again hold an event at the iconic Museum of Islamic Art in celebration of International Museum Day. This event aims to increase public awareness about museums and celebrate the important role they play in supporting countries’ social and cultural development goals.”

International Museum Day, held annually on 18th May, is organised by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and is supported by more than 30,000 museums around the world.

Guests at the Museum of Islamic Art included dignitaries and members of the local community. They were treated to informative and enlightening keynote speeches from renowned speakers, including:

· Mr. Nasser al-Hammadi

· Mr. Abdullah Al Kubaisi

· Dr. Yousef Ismail

· Dr. Rabee Al Kuwari

· Mr. Abdel el Aziz Al Sayed

· Mr. Saeed Ibrahim Al Mohanadi

· Mr. Saoud Abdel Aziz Al Ali

· Mr. Jassim Al Merikhi

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museum Day in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society. The organisation has been steadily gaining momentum ever since. In 2014, International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation with more than 35,000 museums hosting event in some 145 countries.
