The Environmental Monitoring and Inspection Department, in cooperation with the Marine Protection Department at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, responded to a report of a red spot in Qatari territorial waters, through a specialized team from the Water Environment Quality Department, where environmental samples were collected for examination and results extracted.
Through the examination and study conducted in the laboratories of the Environmental Monitoring and Inspection Department, it was found that this spot is an environmental marine phenomenon called the “red tide”, which occurs due to the blooming of certain types of plankton or phytoalgae in the seawater, which causes a change in the color of the water dramatically. Clear to red, which is the color of the phytoplankton that causes the phenomenon.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change confirmed that it had received a report about the red spot in Qatari territorial waters, where the concerned authorities of the Ministry urgently formed a specialized team, equipped with the latest field devices and equipment, as the team made a 6-hour cruise in the process of monitoring and collecting samples, to examine the phenomenon. It was confirmed that it is a natural phenomenon and there is no industrial pollution in the Qatari waters.
This comes within the framework of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change’s keenness and interest in preserving the marine and terrestrial environment, and preventing all types of pollution that cause any harm to living organisms in both environments, through its specialized teams and experts in all related fields, as the Ministry’s agencies are characterized by their rapid response to all communications received. And dealing very seriously with every phenomenon that may occur in the local environment in the State of Qatar, to work on studying and examining it scientifically, which contributes to preserving the Qatari environment and working on its sustainability.
The Ministry's agencies are also on alert to combat all extraneous phenomena in the local environment, whether industrial or natural, which may cause pollution to the local environment, or disturb the environmental balance in the State of Qatar.
