The region’s most modern complex of labour camps, the Labour City in Mesaimeer, is all set to open its doors to its residents — foreign workers — tomorrow.

The City is being inaugurated under the patronage of the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani.

The City has the capacity to accommodate 53,000 workers and has all kinds of amenities, including stadiums, mosques, playgrounds, shopping centres, a large clinic and a number of restaurants.

The clinic will be manned by experienced and specialist doctors and more significantly, it will boast an accident and emergency unit.

The playgrounds and stadiums also include facilities for outdoor games such as volleyball, cricket and football.

The entire city complex has 64 residential buildings, with each building having 130 rooms for workers. Each building, of four floors which can accommodate up to 780 workers, also has a large dining area.

These buildings are grouped into four major sub-complexes, each with 16 buildings.

Besides, there are 16 other residential buildings meant to house executive single workers or senior staff members of companies that take premises here on rent. Each of these buildings have 97 rooms.

There are a total of 9,872 rooms in the entire complex and it covers an area of a staggering 1.8 million square metres. It is literally a whole city and aptly named so.

Known as Barwa Al Baraha project, in its first phase a massive parking area was built for 4,200 trucks and other types of vehicles along with related facilities.

And during its second phase, the Labour City was developed. The project has been developed by state-backed Barwa Real Estate Company.

It is the largest development project ever built not only in Qatar but in the entire region, to house workers.

The city has a police station to maintain law and order and ensure workers’ safety and security.

The city also boasts green space spread over an area of 32,500 square meters.

The supervisory authority for the city sometime ago began asking companies that are interested in taking premises on rent to house their workers to come forward and apply.

These are modern living quarters offering a higher standard of living for workers in low-income categories.

The city is set to be a model accommodation for workers in the entire region. It will also have some 49 used car showrooms.
