The prices of almost all varieties of fresh vegetables at the vegetable and fruit market at Abu Hamour area have dropped considerably recently, local Arabic daily Al reported Sunday.

The main reason for such a drop in prices is the supply of substantial quantities of locally produced vegetables at the market, traders told.

For instance 6kg boxes of eggplants sold for QR8, cucumber QR12, zucchini QR10, sweet pepper QR18, okra QR15 and a 7kg box of mushroom for QR20.

Tomatoes were the only exception with prices more than doubling compared to the previous weeks due to a sharp fall in supply of both local and imported varieties. A nearly 5kg box of locally produced tomatoes, that used to sell for around QR25 a few weeks ago, was sold for up to QR50 or more recently.

A number of consumers stressed that Qatari farms should be encouraged and given more support to increase production of their quality products as this reflects positively on the overall market.

Prices of vegetables often vary day by day based on the supply and demand, the daily added.
