Al Wakra Hospital, Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) eighth and newest hospital, was today officially opened by his Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of Qatar in the presence of VIPs and other dignitaries. The impressive 210 bed facility (which has a flexible capacity of a further 50 beds) as well as 96 critical care and observation beds, occupies an area of 130,000 square meters and will serve the growing communities of Al Wakra and Doha International Airport as well as the population living in the south of the country up to the border with Saudi Arabia. Having a hospital in the heart of their community will mean people living in this area will no longer need to travel to Doha for much of their hospital care. With a staff of nearly 3000, including more than 200 doctors, the new six storey hospital houses emergency departments for adults, children and maternity and the diagnostic imaging department is equipped with MRI and CT scanners. Services on offer include Cardiology, Dental, Ear Nose and Throat, General Medicine (including Endocrine and Gastro Intestinal), General Surgery, Intensive Care for adults (medical and surgical), Maxillo-facial, Renal Medicine (including dialysis), Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Pediatric medicine (including Intensive Care) and Urology. Al Wakra Hospital also houses a “See and Treat” unit for workers, which will relieve pressure on emergency departments at the hospital and Hamad General Hospital. Operating theaters and the ICUs are equipped with world class technology and equipment. Operating Room 1 is fully integrated and operations can be broadcast to anywhere in the world, if needed for teaching, education or specialist input from overseas experts. The hospital’s laboratory is equipped to run a wide range of tests and has a state of the art, fully automated blood analyser with capacity to process thousands of samples every hour and make testing much faster and safer.. “This is a very significant milestone for Qatar and a special day for the community of Al Wakra,” said Dr Hanan Al Kuwari, Managing Director of HMC. “This is a hospital that has been designed, built and staffed with the changing needs and expectations of the growing community it serves at the center of its operation. Al Wakra Hospital will provide comprehensive, high quality healthcare to people of all ages, from emergency care, to general medicine and surgery and highly specialized treatments. “HMC is expanding its scope and capacity year on year as we work to deliver healthcare that is responsive to the growing needs of the people of Qatar.” Dr. Nasser Al Ansari, Medical Director, Al Wakra Hospital said the facilities and services provided by the hospital would make it a model for others in the region. “Those living and working in Al Wakra will, in many cases, no longer need to travel to Doha for diagnosis and treatment. Al Wakra Hospital has not only been designed to meet most of the present needs of the communities it serves, but has also the potential to expand in the future and introduce a wider range of more specialized services.” ILQ NEWS AWH 2 _ please credit Lydia Shaw Photography.jpg
