Hamas accepts ceasefire deal proposal qatari egyptian mediators

[UPDATE: 8 May 2024; 4:10 PM]

As per a report by Al Jazeera on 7 May 2024, the Israeli government made its position clear that the proposal wasn't something it would agree to and as per many analysts, the Israeli government’s message is clear: there will be no permanent ceasefire, and the devastating war on Gaza will continue.

As per Al Jazeera, Israel said that the terms of the Hamas ceasefire differed from previous proposals it had seen. The report also mentioned that analysts believe that the broader issue is that Israel is not willing to agree to a permanent ceasefire, even after Hamas releases Israeli captives.

Another report by Al Jazeera on 7 May 2024 mentioned that a Hamas spokesperson said that “the ball is now in Netanyahu’s court” after Hamas informed the Qatari and Egyptian mediators of the group’s acceptance of a ceasefire proposal.

On 8 May 2024, Al Jazeera reported that an Israeli official has told Reuters that Israel sees no sign of a breakthrough in the Cairo talks on a ceasefire with Hamas.

The report said that the proposal is split into 3 stages and would see an initial halt in the fighting and, eventually, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Palestinian territory.

It would also ensure the release of Israeli captives in Gaza as well as an unspecified number of Palestinians held in Israeli jails.

According to Al Jazeera's developing reports on 6 May 2024, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has informed the Qatari and Egyptian mediators of the group’s acceptance of a ceasefire proposal.

Hamas has issued a statement on the ceasefire:

“The mujahid brother Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Hamas movement’s political bureau, had a phone call with the Qatari Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, and with the Egyptian Minister of Intelligence, Abbas Kamel, and informed them of the Hamas movement’s approval of their proposal regarding the ceasefire agreement.”

Al Jazeera also reports that according to Israel’s Channel 12, the Israeli negotiating team is studying Hamas' response from mediators and will issue an official response.

Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Qatar, announced on 7 May 2024, that the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) sent on 6 May 2024 to the mediators a response to their proposals that they put forward to Israel and the movement regarding the truce, and that the response can be described as positive.

Dr. Al Ansari said in a statement to the Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the Qatari delegation will head to Cairo on Tuesday morning to resume indirect negotiations between the two parties through the mediators, expressing the State of Qatar's hope that the talks will culminate in reaching an agreement for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the exchange of prisoners and detainees, and the sustainable flow of humanitarian aid into all areas of the Strip.
