A number of Iraqi intellectuals have called for awarding this year’s Noble Peace Prize to the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani for his role in brokering a peace agreement between feuding Lebanese rivals. "This is one of the greatest accomplishments in this year," the Iraqi intellectuals said. They described the Doha deal as a great success since the internal sectarian clashes were about to drag Lebanon to the brink of a new civil war, Al Sharq correspondent in Iraq reported yesterday. Dr Abdul Salam Mohsin, who works with Al Kufah University said “what was achieved in Qatar was expected as all people know Qatari political leaders’ capabilities in containing and resolving as well as approximating opinions in such crises.” "All Arabs, Muslims and likeminded people across the globe were holding their breath when the situation in Lebanon worsened. But mediation by the Qatari leadership turned things around and helped reach an amicable solution," he said. "The Noble Peace Prize for this year should go to him," Mohsin added, while also lauding the efforts by the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani. Majeed Ali, an Iraqi lawyer, said the Emir really deserves the prize. "It is the first time an Arab made this kind of achievement."
