In the spirit of collaboration and relationship-building fostered by the Qatar Brazil 2014 Year of Culture, the cities of Doha and Brasilia signed an agreement today to become Sister Cities.
During a signing ceremony at the Museum of Islamic Art, Director of Doha Municipality Mohamed Ahmed Al Sayed and Governor of the Federal District of Brazil Agnelo dos Santos Queiroz Filho formalized the two cities’ warm relationship as an official one as well. The Sister Cities 2014 agreement is based on the two nations’ mutual belief in the important role municipalities play in promoting cultural exchange and cooperation on a national level. Director Al Sayed and Governor Queiroz both spoke during the signing ceremony, which was followed by a diplomatic luncheon at IDAM restaurant in MIA.
As Sister Cities, Doha and Brasilia are committing to grow and improve together. Both are capital cities in countries experiencing growth booms, and an integral part of this agreement is learning from one another. Over the course of the next five years, the two cities will share information, expertise, and experience in a number of areas outlined in this monumental agreement. One such venture is the development of joint programs that will bring Qatari and Brazilian professionals together to exchange knowledge and providing training for better construction, hygiene, education, and waste recycling. In addition, Doha and Brasilia have identified construction and permitting as a key shared interest; as Sister Cities, the two will collaborate to develop best practices for urban planning, infrastructure construction, and permitting for buildings and businesses.
The Ministry of Municipality & Urban Planning and the Federative District of Brazil are also placing emphasis on scientific discovery and health education. Practitioners will travel as part of exchanges to observe the latest developments in their fields, and there are plans to learn from each other’s impressive forestation and urban beautification efforts.
