Several Qataris and expats have criticized the calculation procedures used by insurance companies to settle compensation claims. In most cases the companies pay the lowest possible amount, to the disappointment of clients. Many policy holders have urged the insurance companies to fix the compensation payable in the contract itself to avoid the confusing calculation methods. Talking about health insurance, the complainants said claims were often delayed by insurance firms when the policy-holders had to go for surgical procedures. However, insurance companies say they are committed to the contracts between the company and the policy-holder. They often blame the policy-holders for not understanding policy conditions properly. Abdullah Masoud Al Muhannadi said he suffered a lot when a car he bought for his son for QR90,000 met with an accident. "After approaching the concerned insurance company several times and after a long procedure we got only QR12,000 as final settlement." The insurance company said if a car involved in an accident is a second-hand one, the compensation is calculated based on depreciation.
