Hyatt Plaza will host Fast-a-thon 2015, a charity event that gives non-Muslims the opportunity to experience fasting for a day, on June 26 and 27.
The initiative is being organised by Hyatt Plaza, Qatar Charity and Edad Centre. The proceedings will be donated to help orphans in Somalia.
This will be the sixth edition of Fast-a-thon.
For every non-Muslim who registers and participates in Fast-a-thon, Hyatt Plaza and Qatar Charity will donate QR200 on his/her behalf to educate orphans in Somalia. The mall will also organise an Iftar party for all the participants to promote the universal values of brotherhood, tolerance and empathy.
The purpose of this event is to create a “real communication between civilisations by giving non-Muslims a true understanding of the spirit of Ramadan”, according to a statement.
The mall is also collaborating with Primary Health Care Corporation to provide an opportunity for the participants to get clarifications on the health effects of fasting through an interactive session.
Over the years, Fast-a-thon has become one of Hyatt Plaza’s most-awaited events, the statement notes. It saw more than 340 participants in 2014 and raised QR68,000 in donations and over QR70,000 through a related photography exhibition, which helped the mall receive an award for cause-related marketing from the Middle East Council for Shopping Centres.
“Such events are organised for the community and provide a platform for those with the right means to develop a better understanding of others’ culture and get involved every year in different international causes,” said Feroz Moideen, general manager, Hyatt Plaza.
The proceedings from Fast-a-thon will be donated to a pilot project created by Dr Bilal Philips, titled “Help the Orphans”. An intensive English course, which will make 500 Somalian orphans and destitute children proficient in English and give them an opportunity to contribute towards the progress of Somalia, will be offered.
On the first day of Fast-a-thon, the participants will be given information and instructions about fasting and the cause. Later, they will get a chance to express their feelings and thoughts about the experience during an Iftar party.
Registration is currently open for Fast-a-thon and those interested have the option of registering online via the mall’s website, www.hyattplaza.com, through e-mail at [email protected] or in person at Hyatt Plaza customer service. They can also call Hyatt Plaza customer service at 44999666.
Participation is open to all non-Muslims. All participants will be invited for an orientation session at 4pm on June 26, in the Hyatt Plaza food court.
