Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) recently celebrated the achievements of the University’s exceptional students in local and international competitions. From being awarded with prestigious research fellowships, to winning top national and regional competitions, students from HBKU’s colleges have been excelling in the classroom, research labs, and beyond.

Congratulating the achievers, Dr. Khaled B. Letaief, HBKU Provost, said: “We are proud of the students who have invested valuable time, energy, and effort towards elevating the status of HBKU on a global and local level. Their exemplary performance showcases the high quality of education and programs imparted by HBKU, and their achievements have made the University proud.”

Eleven students from HBKU’s various colleges and programs were recognized at an appreciation ceremony held on Monday at the HBKU Headquarters. Two of the 11 students being recognized at the event study at HBKU’s College of Science and Engineering. Ahmad Fard, a PhD student specializing in Sustainable Environment, and Ahmer Baloch, a PhD student specializing in Sustainable Energy, celebrated winning two of four 2017 ORYX GTL Student Awards. The prestigious awards shortlist outstanding post-graduate students across Qatar’s higher education institutes who are pursuing cutting-edge research through their studies in energy-related fields. The students were recognized for their contributions to Qatar’s knowledge-based future, and were awarded for their commitment to the research and development of the country’s energy sector.

Meanwhile, from HBKU’s College of Science and Engineering (CSE), PhD candidate Dema Almasri was acknowledged and awarded the esteemed Women in Science Fellowship. The fellowship award was overseen by the Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF Global) for advancing civilian-oriented science and entrepreneurship. CRDF Global, based in the United States, selects the most talented and innovative scientists from around the world, enabling them to successfully conduct their research through funding and collaboration. Almasri will continue to pursue her research in Sustainable Environment with a focus on the modification of natural nanomaterials for water purification at HBKU’s CSE, in collaboration with the Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute (QEERI).

Eiman Tabat, Omnia Tarek, Hafis Bello, and Faris Kader, who are students at HBKU’s College of Islamic Studies (CIS), worked with faculty mentor Bahnaz Al-Quradaghi and were praised for winning second place at this year’s highly competitive Al Ruwad Business Case Competition. Hosted by the College of North Atlantic – Qatar, the inter-collegial competition saw ten teams joining in from universities around Qatar. It was held over three days, and CIS’ team earned the prize based on their ability to effectively analyze a business problem using an innovative approach, derived from a comprehensive consultative mindset.

Finally, Khalid Ahmed Al-Ansari, Asma Al-Khulaifi, Mohammed Al-Ahmadani, and Aisha Al-Naama, who are students at HBKU’s College of Law and Public Policy (CLPP), were congratulated on their impressionable participation in the 4th Europa Moot Court Competition. Aisha Al-Naama received one of the Best Oralist Awards for her performance at the proceedings. The competition took place in Kavala, Greece, and CLPP’s team made it to the semi-final round with guidance from their faculty mentor, Georgios Dimitropoulos. Taking part in the international event with teams from across Europe and others around the world helped build CLPP students’ skillsets in being able to effectively collaborate and deliver results in a multicultural and global setting.

“As a premier research university in the region, we are constantly encouraging students to participate in competitive events and programs that help them grow as scholars,” Dr. Khaled B. Letaief continued. “It is through these recognitions that we continue to build on knowledge and create lasting value in academic research.”
