Once again at the forefront of Qatar’s efforts to protect the environment by reducing harmful waste, Al Meera Consumer Goods Company (Q.P.S.C.) backed Global Recycling Day with a program of environment-friendly initiatives in an effort to make a difference and encourage communities to make small changes to their lifestyle for a greener future.

Qatar’s favourite neighbourhood retailer encouraged its customers and public to recycle plastic bottles and cans by depositing them into the recycling machines, available at 21 Al Meera branches. On the occasion of Global Recycling Day which is celebrated annually on 18th March worldwide, the company offered 5x the usual point earned by customers who deposit plastic bottles and cans into the instore recycling machines from 17-20 March.

Customers have already made a big difference by supporting Al Meera’s recycling initiatives with the latest statistic revealing over 20 million plastic bottles and cans have so far been recycled at Al Meera branches – enough recycled energy to power 5 million lightbulbs for one day.

Also leading the way in helping to prevent the spread of harmful chemicals from used batteries, Al Meera provides battery recycling bins in 16 branches.

Guided by Qatar’s National Vision 2030 which calls for harmony between economic growth, social development and environmental protection, Al Meera aims to inspire positive behaviour by encouraging the younger generation to lead a sustainable and environment friendly lifestyle.

This occasion also comes with Al Meera’s announcement of its collaboration with the College of Health and Life Sciences at Hamad bin Khalifa University as part of sustainability plans to widen its environmental efforts. To encourage the younger generation to lead a sustainable and environment friendly lifestyle, Al Meera is working with the College of Health and Life Sciences (CHLS) through its paper recycling partner, Elite Paper Recycling, to introduce paper recycling on campus with a commitment from the university to recycle all used paper in its offices and classrooms.

In addition, Al Meera welcomed the Interim Dean of CHLS, Dr Georges Nemer and a group of CHLS-HBKU students to its Muraikh branch to responsibly recycle plastic bottles collected on campus, promoting the importance of recycling.

All of the company’s environmental activities will run in parallel with Al Meera’s social media channels to highlight the importance of the Global Recycling Day and remind their followers and customers about the importance of leading a sustainable lifestyle and their responsibility towards a better future.
