KidZania Doha hosted the Sustainability Zummit on 11 September 2023 with the theme “Sustainability in Action: From Vision to Implementation.” KidZania Doha sees that this event will be a pivotal moment for Qatar in terms of sustainability in a world increasingly concerned about sustainability and the future.

At the Zummit, experts, educators, and young minds all around the world discussed and promoted sustainable practices in terms of, not only the environment, but also the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations. As mentioned by Prof. Dr. Ger Graus OBE, the first Global Head of Education at KidZania and the event’s keynote speaker and panel moderator, people often forget that sustainability isn’t just about the environment and climate change, it is also about inclusivity, quality education, peace, and a lot more.

Panel discussions

The Zummit then hosted thought-provoking panel discussions, bringing together experts from different parts of the globe. The first panel discussion was joined by Eng. Nassra Alhameedi from Ministry of Municipality, Ms. Dalia Abu-Qaoud from Al Meera, Mr. Ghanim Al-Sulaiti from Enbat Holdings, and Ms. Maria Parsons from Grey Group.

These notable panelists gave the audience an interactive and insightful session, delving into pressing sustainable issues while offering diverse perspectives and solutions. They discussed how sustainability functions in both the government and private sectors, and how to properly promote and advertise sustainability to better encourage people to join the cause.

For the second batch of panel discussion, Mr. Nick Prowse from Sherborne Qatar, Ms. Lamia Ibrahim from Al Nebras International Preschool, Mr. Wassim Merheby from Verofax, and Dr. Achraf Othman from Mada Center graced the stage. They, on the other hand, discussed how important it is to introduce sustainability to children during their early years. They also discussed the various technologies that companies have come up with to help them better understand the concept of the topic.

After the discussions, participants had the chance to ask questions, engage in meaningful conversations, and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the realm of sustainability.

The anticipated panel discussion included topics such as the role of companies and schools in influencing children about sustainability and the effective ways on how to do it. They also discussed what we, as individuals, can do in our daily lives to build a sustainable world for today and the future generation.

There were several visionary speakers who shared their take on certain topics about sustainability. Mr. Augusto Arvista, a student at GEMS Wellington Qatar, talked about the role of students in bringing about change. On the other hand, Mr. Kursat Ceylan, a blind entrepreneur who is a co-founder of WeWALK, spoke about enhancing the mobility of visually impaired people. Last but not least, Mr. Angelos Dendrinos, the General Manager of Rayyan Water, spoke on how organizations should embrace circular economy principles to transform their sustainability visions to impactful actions.

These speeches did not only inspire but also provided the participants with a profound understanding of the critical issues surrounding sustainability. The speakers all shared their experiences, research findings, and visions that ignited the passion and curiosity of the guests, encouraging them to actively engage with sustainability issues.

Interactive exhibits from different companies

The event also featured interactive exhibits from different companies that displayed sustainable technologies and innovations. The guests had the chance to explore and learn about the different ways on how they can incorporate sustainability into their schools and homes.

The exhibits found at the Zummit were brought by the Ministry of Municipality, Qatar Career Development Center, Qatar National Library, Qatar Red Crescent, Al Aziziyah Boutique Hotel, The Torch Doha, Rayyan Water, Qatar Rail, Al Nebras International Preschool, Sherborne Qatar, Naseem Healthcare, Verofax, ARCedtech, and Seashore Group.
