Art and design connoisseurs from across the globe will soon be able to connect with Qatar’s latest generation of artists and designers at an online show that will highlight the works of some of the most exciting and innovative artists and designers in Qatar.

Starting June 15, Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar), a long-established center of art and design education in the Arabian Gulf region, will provide the public with the opportunity to view the work of the university’s Class of 2020 students, through a website dedicated to their creativity.

Escaping chaos, cultural production in Qatar, edible packaging, bridal dresses, third culture kids, designer babies, Palestine, mental health, fake news, social hierarchies, and handbags are some of the themes that have been examined by this year’s cohort of Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, MFA in Design, and Painting and Printmaking graduates. Altogether over 70 art and design projects by this year’s Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts students – curated as the BFA+MFA 2020 Online Show – will be on display at http://vcuqbfamfa.com

The online show highlights the repertoire of skills and talents of VCUarts Qatar’s Class of 2020. These include animation, textile design, fabrication technology, visual languages, product, print and website design, typography, light and colour in interior environments, home fashion merchandising, building code requirements, interior graphics, printmaking, digital painting, screen-printing, lithography, computer programming, and photographic stencil techniques, to name but a few.

The Class of 2020 follows in the footsteps of alumni whose works have been shown at exhibitions and events everywhere from Doha, Dubai, and London, to Berlin, Moscow, Paris, and Hong Kong.

VCUarts Qatar, a Qatar Foundation partner university, offers students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in fashion design, graphic design, interior design and painting & printmaking, a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in design.

“Though the need to present the final show of the class of 2020 in a digital format was driven by the pandemic situation, we hope it will result in even greater reach and impact of the talent and creative work that emerged from our innovative graduating students,” said Amir Berbić, Dean of Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar. “We were thrilled with the expansive areas of interest and contemplation that were explored in this collection, some on issues that profoundly affect society and others from a more playful, light perspective.”
