H.H. The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani issued Law No. 10 of 2018 on permanent residency on September 4th, 2018. Qatar is one of very few countries in the Middle East that has taken an initiative to reward those that it sees fit with a right to stay here permanently. The step Qatar has taken seems to be a huge one in the right direction. Not only will it create a sense of belonging and reward those who have done a service to the country, but will also make room for more positive discussion and help strengthen Qatar economically, socially, and politically.

Now you can obtain permanent residency permit (PRP) of Qatar under certain rules and conditions. Check out below to know conditions as well as procedures to obtain permanent residency permit of Qatar.

Rules and regulations to obtain the permanent residency permit

Under certain specific rules and regulations, expatriates are now permitted to obtain permanent residency permits of Qatar. The requirements are below:

1. The applicant should have completed 20 years in Qatar on a legal ordinary residency permit if he/she was born outside of Qatar. If the applicant was born in Qatar, the applicant needs to complete 10 years in Qatar. The residency duration must be consecutive without any breaks and should be prior to the submission date of the application for the permanent residency permit. The continuation of the applicant's residency in Qatar should not be interrupted by staying outside the country for over 60 days in a year and the duration of the stay outside of Qatar will be deducted from the balance of the residency within Qatar. If the applicant leaves Qatar after applying for the permanent residency permit for more than six months consecutively, the Minister of Interior (MOI)has the right to disqualify the applicant's previous residency duration in the country.

2. The applicant should have enough income to cover the expenses of himself and his family. A cabinet decision will specify the applicant's minimum income along with exceptional cases.

3. The applicant should have a good conduct and reputation. The applicant should not have any previous convictions of any dishonourable offence unless he/she has been rehabilitated in accordance with Qatar's law.

4. The applicant should have sufficient knowledge of the Arabic language.

5. The provision of Article No. 1 is not applicable to some special categories of expatriates like the non-Qatari husband of a Qatari woman, any children of a Qatari woman married to a non-Qatari, a non-Qatari husband of a Qatari woman, an expatriate wife of a Qatari citizen, any children of a Qatari with naturalization, people with special capabilities who are needed by the state. Clauses 1,2 and 3 will be applied on the expatriate husband of a Qatari woman, who applies for the permanent residency permit of Qatar.

How to apply for the permanent residency permit?

The application should be submitted through the Electronic Services Portal of the Ministry of Interior’s website, if the applicant meets the requirements, he/she will be contacted by an SMS to submit the required documents, the applicant has to pay the prescribed fee of QR 3000 if the applicant is eligible for a permanent residency. After completing all the procedures, the applicant is required to pay a final fee of QR 3000 to collect the residency permit.
