Pronounce qtr v1

Qatar welcomes many people from all around the world. From tourists to expats, the country is a melting pot of nationalities who speak different languages. It is expected that foreigners in Qatar might not always be the best Arabic speakers, especially when pronouncing the word 'Qatar'.

Often, Qatar is heard as "Quatar", "Keyter", "Kaatarr", or "kuh-TAR"! It might be the easiest way to say it as you phonetically read the word, but you may be saying it incorrectly.

To help you with the correct pronunciation, the (ILQ) team made this fun article to help the word 'Qatar' roll off your mouth smoothly!

How to say 'Qatar' like a local

'Qatar' spelt in Arabic is "ﻗَﻄَﺮ". The first letter is best pronounced with a deep-throated "k". Try closing your throat a bit for this one! The second is a strong "t", which, if said correctly, should make a strong "TA" sound and not a soft "ta" sound. The final sound is an "ar" with a rolled "r."

You might be surprised, but saying "cutter" is pretty close to pronouncing 'Qatar' correctly! In many Arabic words, the first letter in "Qatar" is pronounced more with a deep "g" than a hard "c". Locals in Qatar often pronounce it this way too - turning the "k" into a "g", almost like how you say "guitar"!

Sounds pretty easy, right? Try it out for yourself!

How not to say 'Qatar'

Of course, it's still okay not to be able to say it correctly the first time. But, if you're touring the country and want to be able to connect with the locals, maybe pronouncing the name of the country properly can help you!
