UPDATE: 12 March 2020 3:27 pm

The Ministry of Culture and Sports has gotten together with the Qatar Voluntary Centre to distribute praying mats to the people who go to mosques to pray. After they finish praying, they can take the mats with them.

The idea is that, to stop the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), everyone going to mosques should carry their own praying mats as mentioned in the article below.

The praying mats will be distributed today just before the Maghreb prayers at:

  1. Mohamed abdulwahab Mosque
  2. Omar Ibn Alkhattab Mosque
  3. Said Nasser Al Naemi Mosque (opposite the Duhail Sports Club)

The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (AWQAF) in Qatar has notified the Imams of all the Mosques in Qatar to secure and maintain the safety of the people who go to mosques for prayers everyday in compliance with the precautionary procedures taken by the government of Qatar and the relevant authorities against the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The following precautionary measures are to be taken in Mosques throughout Qatar to avoid the spread of this virus:

  1. The mosques and its annexes must be cleaned thoroughly on a daily basis.
  2. Anything that might transfer infections like cups/glasses near the water dispensers, soap bars or trash bins inside mosques should be removed.
  3. People who have symptoms of the flu or a cold should not come to mosques till they are better.
  4. People should bring their own prayer mats.
  5. Windows and ventilation ports should be opened on a daily basis to ventilate mosques especially during prayer times and after.
  6. The waiting period between the Adhaan (call to prayer) and the Iqama (prayer) should be reduced to five minutes for all prayers.
  7. Mosques should be closed 15 minutes after each prayer.

AWQAF hopes that everyone complies to the above precautionary measures so we can all work together to prevent the coronavirus (COVID-19) from spreading throughout Qatar.
