Qatari artist Ahmed Al Maadheed, famous for his iconic ‘Tamim Al Majd’ painting, is set to unveil 48 paintings and six art pieces at a new exhibition called ‘5/6’ - the date that marked a turning point in the country’s recent history.
“The exhibition is called 5/6, the date of the blockade and it tells the story of how Qatar succeeded amid the blockade. Most of my artworks which will be displayed are new, while some have featured in private exhibitions,” said Al Maadheed while speaking to local media at a press conference yesterday at W Doha to announce his latest solo exhibition.
The show will officially open at Art 29 at W Doha Hotel & Residences on Sunday and will be open to the public from September 17 to October 16.
Divided into several sections, the exhibition will feature a section which showcases art that describes the pride and glory of Qatar with a number of masterpieces which combine passion, commitment and creativity.
Another section will depict the artist’s passion for sports as he drew the six balls at the closing of the2018 World Cup in Russia which was to welcome viewers around the globe to the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
“It is about football and Russian culture shown during the World Cup in Russia seen by around 200 million televiewers, but this will be the first time it will be seen by the public in person,” he explained, adding his Paris Saint- Germain artwork which seen only on social media and at a private exhibition will also be exhibited.
One of the sections of the exhibition is dedicated to miscellaneous artistic work that outlines culture, environment and human emotions. There will also be an interactive viewing section to satisfy the visitor’s curiosity and passion for art.
Apart from paintings, most of which will be for sale, the show will feature art pieces inspired by Picasso, Shakespeare and other prominent personalities in art and culture, as well as a gift shop where visitors can buy posters and other merchandise inspired by Ahmed’s works.
This is the second time that Al Maadheed will stage a solo exhibition at Art 29.
“We are proud to again have this partnership with Ahmed Al Maadheed, a great artist known worldwide. We started this collaboration over a year ago with a very successful exhibition and now we are having it again but in a very different way that Ahmed will surely surprise all of us with all the art pieces,” said Wassim Daaje, General Manager of W Doha, underlining W Doha’s support for art through Art 29.
Al Maadheed said: “I am extremely proud to bring my latest collection to Art 29, this is a personal exhibition which is close to my heart. I thankfully have the time to focus on what I love to do the most; and that is creating pieces that speak not only to me and what I have accomplished in life, but what I have accomplished for our beloved Qatar. My collection at Art 29 now is a continuation of my original piece, Tamim the Glorious. I want to continue showcasing how our nation is growing and thriving – all through my eyes.”
In support of the exhibition an exclusive afternoon tea has been created in conjunction with the artist. The vibrant afternoon tea is inspired by his artwork and will be offered at the W Café & Art 29 from 12.30pm to 7.30pm starting on September 17.
