FIFA announced on 18 December 2022 a new record set by Lionel Messi as the first-ever player to score in the Round of 16, Quarter-final, Semi-final & Final within a single FIFA World Cup tournament, which adds to the many records Lionel Messi currently holds

A total of seven goals were scored by Messi at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ at each stage.

Messi's first goal was scored in Argentina's first tournament match against Saudi Arabia. In Argentina's second group-stage match, Messi scored against Mexico.

Messi scored his third goal of the tournament against Australia in the Round of 16 matches.

Argentina's Quarter-final match against the Netherlands witnessed Messi's fourth goal, and the Semi-final match against Croatia witnessed his fifth goal.

In the battle against France at Finals, Messi scored his sixth & seventh goals in the tournament.

Messi sets the record as the player with the most World Cup appearances & assists

  • Lionel Messi boasts the title of the most FIFA World Cup™ appearances with a total of 26, which surpasses German Lothar Matthaus' record of 25 appearances at the competition.
  • Messi is the only player to register an assist in five World Cups. His closest challengers are Pele, Grzegorz Lato, Diego Maradona and David Beckham, who set up goals in three editions apiece.
