AFRICA

Five teams will represent Africa at Qatar 2022.

ASIA

Five or six teams will represent the AFC in Qatar.

How it works:
The top two teams in each group will qualify for Qatar 2022. The third-placed teams in each section will meet in a single-game tie for the right to go into an intercontinental playoff for a place at the World Cup. In addition, Qatar have qualified as hosts.

EUROPE

Thirteen teams will represent UEFA in Qatar.

How it works: The remaining three group winners will automatically qualify for the global finals. The ten runners up will enter the 12-team European playoffs. The remaining two spots in these will be taken by the best two 2020/21 UEFA Nations League group winners who did not finish in their section’s top two in the Qatar 2022 preliminaries. France and Spain, therefore, are guaranteed a playoff place if they do not finish first or second in their respective groups.

    NORTH, CENTRAL AMERICA & CARIBBEAN

Three or four teams will represent Concacaf at Qatar 2022.

How it works: The top three will qualify for Qatar 2022. The third-placed finishers will go into an intercontinental playoff.

    OCEANIA

Zero or one team will represent the OFC at Qatar 2022. Qualification will begin next year.

    SOUTH AMERICA

Four or five teams will represent CONMEBOL at Qatar 2022.

How it works: The top four teams will secure World Cup qualification. The fifth-placed finishers will go into an intercontinental playoff.

    This is a developing story.
