HIA's 'unique' expansion to begin in early 2020 to redefine travel experience

Hamad International Airport is all set to start its expansion as early as January 2020 with plans to increase its capacity to accommodate approximately 60 million passengers passing through the airport on a yearly basis. At present, the airport, which was originally designed to accommodate 28 million passengers yearly is actually accommodating almost 38 million passengers, according to the Aviation Analyst.

The expansion which is located at the HIA terminal's north terminal will link Concourse E to Concourse D, to accommodate the steadily growing influx of passengers at the airport.

Most of the passengers that currently travel through HIA travel are flying with Qatar Airways, which has a 65% share at the 5-star award-winning airport. The second largest user of the airport is Indigo which is India's biggest airline based on the number of passengers it accommodates and its fleet size. Indigo is followed by Air India, Kuwait Airways, Sri Lankan Airlines, and Royal Jordanian, as reported on the Aviation Analyst website.

The award-winning airport, recently ranked 2nd in the prestigious 2019 Travel and Leisure World's Best Awards, based upon the direct feedback of their readers who voted for their favorite airport across the globe, upon criteria such as access, check-in, security, restaurants, shopping, and design.

'Unique' expansion

HIA promises that it is also planning to offer passengers at the airport something unique when the expansion is completed before the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. The expansion will feature dining areas, relaxation places, modernised first and business lounges, along with other visionary features that will take on Singapore Changi Airport’s new marvel, ‘The Jewel”.

"The Jewel" is a rain vortex feature designed as the world's tallest waterfall that is surrounded by a terraced forest setting and can be found in three of the terminals at the Singapore Changi Airport. It's a must-see for passengers who pass through one of the world's most advanced airports, and soon, we will be able to revel in its beauty at HIA, as highlighted in the Aviation Analyst.

HIA, in addition to sustaining a seamless passenger journey and advancing its technology, is expanding its terminal to strengthen its ability to scale and compete with leading airports while increasing connectivity for airlines and passengers. The expansion hopes to meet the demands of the increasing number of passengers and enhance the comfort and quality of service for travelers from around the world that pass through this leading global aviation hub by redefining the airport experience.
