The Aspire International Kite Festival 2018

After attracting more than 40,000 visitors in its first year, Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) is preparing to host the second Aspire International Kite Festival, a three-day event due to take place in Aspire Park from March 6-9, 2018.

Teams of professional kite-flyers will gather in Doha to compete in a range of individual and team kite events, including synchronized kite performances, and kite-flying art displays. The country’s first kinetic wind decorations have also been set up in Aspire Park to captivate visitors.

Inter-school competitions

In addition, amateur enthusiasts and young children will be able to design and decorate their own kites and take part in inter-school competitions that are organized by AZF as part of the main event in March. Children from Grades 1-6 can enter the competition with a maximum of ten students per team.

In the run-up to this year’s inter-schools competitions, AZF organized a three-day workshop series for 60 teachers from 15 schools last November. The specially-designed workshops were organized to provide inspiration and ideas for how to build and decorate a kite, as well as tips and tricks for flying them and easy to follow explanations of kite aerodynamics.

The workshops were delivered by acclaimed Canadian trainer, Robert Trépanier. Trépanier’s airborne portraiture has had a huge impact on the art of kite-flying. His own kite features caricatures of everyday people with distinguished, sometimes dark, and often humorous features. In his workshops, Trépanier addressed topics such as kite history, the science behind kite-flying, and different techniques for of kite-making, tailored to be easily understood and implemented by young children.

First-place school team winners will walk away with QR 50,000, while second-place winners will take home QR 30,000, and third-place winners QR 10,000. Last year’s winners were Muaz bin Jabal School, Gheras International School, and Birla Public School.

The Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF) 2018 will open on March 15 and continue for 11 days at Hotel Park. QIFF 2018 brings culinary and cultural experiences from all corners of the globe to Qatar's residents and visitors.

QIFF is the second country-wide festival of 2018, and follows on from Shop Qatar, which witnessed a 40% increase in sales based on the total number of coupons entered into raffle draws over the month-long festival.

Special Festival Experiences

Festival favourites are back this year such as the signature Live Cooking Theater with participation from internationally-renowned chefs such as U.S. MasterChef Christine Ha, Qatar's very own Aisha Al Tamimi, Kuwaiti cook Fawaz Al Omaim, Indian celebrity chef Ajay Chopra, Lebanese celebrity chef Ramzi Choueiri, and the Michelin Star chef who has been preparing the post-Oscars feast for 24 years, Wolfgang Puck. They, along with others will be sharing their culinary delights from 6:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. daily with a different theme each day.

Also back this year, is the Health Zone which encourages conscious eating habits and life choices that promote overall well-being. There will also be free fitness classes regularly held throughout QIFF allowing festival-goers to get their blood pumping while enjoying the outdoor festivities at Hotel Park.

This year, QIFF is also shedding a spotlight on locally-owned coffee shops which have become contemporary symbols of cultural and social exchange. The dedicated Coffee Zone which will give coffee lovers a chance to immerse themselves in the bean's rich aromas and flavours.

Exciting Entertainment

Adding to the festive atmosphere at Hotel Park, the main festival stage will host a variety of live performances and cultural shows running throughout the day. In the evenings, fireworks displays will light up the sky above the Doha Corniche at 8:00 pm.

Family Fun

This year, QIFF has expanded the children's area to include a mini-zoo and farmer's market, providing parents and children an opportunity to learn more about our food's journey from farm to fork. Children will be provided with sports classes, as well as creative activities courtesy of Café Ceramique.

In Doha & Around Qatar

QIFF returns with new concepts that take it beyond the festival grounds, offering an array of delightful culinary experiences across the country.

Bringing QIFF to restaurants and cafes across Qatar, festival organizers are once again offering the QIFF Menu from March 1-31. The QIFF Menu allows residents and visitors to enjoy mouth-watering food groupings of three menu items at a pre-set price of QR 49 at stand-alone cafes and restaurants, and QR 99 at hotels.
