We know everywhere right now, the conversation is circling around the coronavirus (COVID-19) and a lot of us are at home either working from home, studying from or taking care tirelessly of those that are at home in these times. And though, a lot of things have been temporarily closed down to help prevent the spread of this dreadful virus, that doesn’t mean we can’t still celebrate Arabic Mother’s Day on Saturday 21 March 2020.

In case you’re wondering, this date signifies Mother’s Day in the Arab World, and is celebrated every year on 21 March with much fanfare and excitement. And, why not? A mother is one of the most important persons in anyone’s life; she is the nurturer, the carer, the giver and she is the life of who we are. And, she should definitely be celebrated, along with the entire concept of motherhood,, maternal bonds and ties, and the influence mothers have in our society.

So, whoever it is you’re celebrating this Mother’s Day with, there are so many ways to show them how special they are to you, even if you can’t take them to their favourite restaurant, pamper them with a spa visit, or take them to the mall to buy them a special gift right now.

We’re taking a little time off here from talking about the coronavirus (COVID-19), and sharing with you ways that you can celebrate the women who are the reason for you this Arabic Mother's Day!

Let her sleep in

As a mother myself, I know that I don't get to sleep in a lot, so this is probably one of the best gifts you could give her. Let her sleep as much as she wants to. Close her door so she won't be disturbed and don't make too much noise.

Breakfast in bed

When she wakes up, why not tell her to relax, and offer her a nice breakfast in bed. Make her favourite breakfast and serve it to her with a little heartfelt note telling her how important she is to you!

Give her flowers

Who doesn’t like flowers? You can have flowers delivered to her. We bet she’ll love those!

Give her a day off

The best thing you could do for her is give her a day off from all the household work. Tell her to sit back and just relax. She can read or watch some TV, or whatever she wants as long as it doesn’t entail any kind of work in the house. She surely deserves some time off to do something she wants but isn’t able to because of her everyday chores.

Spend the day together

Since this is her day, she deserves your love and attention. So, why not spend lots of time with her and do the things she would like you to do with her. It could be anything she wants to do. You can cook together, watch TV or a movie together, paint together, go through old pictures and talk about when they were taken and why.

Make her a handmade card

Make a handmade card for her and tell her in it how much you love her, appreciate her and how important she is to you. She’ll have the biggest smile on her face when she reads it

Make her a special handmade gift

We all love gifts, and she is no different. Take out some time to make her a gift – a token of your love for her - that’s meaningful. It can be anything; just the fact that it’s handmade will make her feel special because she’ll know you specially took out the time for her.

Pamper and spoil her

Give her a day of complete relaxation. Since you won’t be able to book her a spa treatment, hair treatment, manicure and pedicure, or a massage in a nice salon amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Qatar and the, subsequent, closure of spas and salons till further notice, you can give her a back rub, dye her hair for her, giver her a home manicure and pedicure and soak her feet in some nice warm water so she feels completely relaxed and ready to take on the world again the next day.

Bake a cake together

Why not get out a nice recipe, and bake together. It’s a great way to bond and you’ll get to spend some quality time together as you ponder over the recipe, get the ingredients together and get to work to bake a cake. It’ll be so much fun.

Make a scrapbook

Pull out all the old photographs you have and put together a scrapbook or your favourite memories with her. If you've kept any tickets or mementos from those times, add them, too. She's bound to tear up with joy when she sees the trouble you went through to put your fondest memories of both of you to keep and cherish.

Take lots of photographs

Take plenty of photographs with her this Mother's Day and choose which ones you both like so you can add them to the scrapbook, too!

Order her a nice gift online

Yes, it's true that because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak all over the world, she may not get her gift in time because of the delays in freight, we guarantee that whenever she does get it, she'll be over the moon!

Make her favourite meal at dinner time

If she's the one who always makes your favourite meals, it's time to do the same for her. She'll enjoy the pampering and feel well-loved!

What if your mother is not here in Qatar with you

It would be lovely if we could see our mothers every day or, at least, a few times a week, but that isn't always possible especially if you're here and she's in another country. In this case, you can still make her feel special on Arabic Mother's Day. Give her a call and talk to her about things she would like to talk about, send her a gift voucher, order her something nice online, send her a handmade card, or e-mail her a lovely heartfelt note telling her how much she means to you!
