New year, new resolution! Starting to practice a new sport is the best way to get in shape and lead a healthier life in 2019. Triathlon is one of the sports that can offer you this, besides the chance to enjoy the outdoors, and fully sense the open water, wind and sun, using all the muscles of your body to swim, cycle and run.
For a taste of this sport, Doha Triathlon offers a starters’ race. The Super Sprint distance for beginners and children 13-15 years old, with a 375 m swim, a 10 km cycle and a 2.5 km run. It will be amongst other longer races and the Qatar National Championship. You will join a good mix of professional, international, local and amateur athletes, for a unique opportunity to cycle on Doha Corniche, swim in the safe waters of the bay, and enjoy the greeneries of the Museum of Islamic Art park.
The event will be held on 8th February and registration is open till Monday 4th February (inclusive) through www.doha-triathlon.com.
Ebrahim Al Rumaihi, last year’s National Champion sends a message to all new athletes: “stay always consistent, there is nothing more rewarding than being consistent in all aspects of life”. He is preparing himself at the moment for a tough battle for the title as he expects the three top athletes from last year to improve.
Aday Alvárez, best overall in the Olympic distance, said “I have enjoyed the last two editions of Doha Triathlon too much and looking forward to the next one. The venue and organization are so good that I believe it can host an ITU Asian Cup or even a World Cup in the upcoming years. Having been twice on the podium, I am wishing to repeat it this year. The level of competition has incredibly increased this year, so hard work and a mini training camp in Gran Canaria (Spain) is my strategy to face the race next February”.
The races promise excitement for most athletes competing in the National Triathlon Series, a scoring system for national ranking comprising of 5 opportunity events to score 4 best results. It is organised by Qatar Triathlon Federation. Young upcoming triathlete Ethan Bennett is currently leading and challenging the male open series category previous winners, while elite females Pia Sundstedt, Isora Sosa Caballero and Julie Melville, are amongst many other upcoming local athletes in the female category.
The event will also include a Fun Duathlon for kids, aged between 7 to 12 years old. They will cycle and run for short distances around the park.
Prof. Nasser al Mohannadi, Triathlon Director at Qatar Triathlon Federation, said, “We are very happy to celebrate the third event in Qatar National Triathlon Series. The Museum of Islamic Art Park is a lovely location for triathlon. As the Board Member of Cycling and Triathlon Federation and a founding president of QTRI, I would like to thank Qatar Museums for their support and for hosting the event, along with all the other sponsors and partners, who contributed to make the event a success for all. Triathlon is the fastest growing sport in the world and locally.”
Doha Triathlon is sponsored by Qatar National Tourism Authority, with the support of Qatar Triathlon Federation and Qatar Museums, for more information about the event, visit www.doha-triathlon.com.
