The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) will host a flag relay on Thursday (December 13) in an effort to unite, inspire as well as share pride with the nation through Team Qatar in celebration of National Day 2018. The aim of the flag relay is to raise the flag across the city with current and retired athletes, school children, members from different communities and the general public. Participants will have the opportunity to fly the Qatari flag with proud across the country's iconic landmarks, carrying it via a wide variety of sporting activities and culminating in a grand finale at Aspire Zone.

Besides celebrating the colours of the maroon flag, the Flag Relay 2018 will raise awareness of cancer and promote the importance of early detection.

In 2017, over 600 athletes, school children as well as inspirational people carried the flag across Qatar. Last year'sedition actually broke a world record unintentionally. This year’s edition will be much bigger and greater with more participants, longer distance and an attempt to break multiple World Guinness Records.

The 2018 edition of Flag Relay will try to break two Guinness World Records. The first record is for the most people in a cycling relay, which will start from Hamad International Airport to Meshereb Properties. Qatar Olympic Committee is working jointly with Qatar Cycling Federation to include Team Qatar athletes and avid cyclists from the community.

While, the second Guinness World Record attempt will take place at Oxygen Park, the green lung of Education City, and is for the most people running 100 meters in a 1-hour relay. The current record holds at 252 and was achieved in 2012 the United States. QOC is working closely with Qatar Foundation in preparation to break this record with Team Qatar athletes and the public.

Flag Relay Route 2018

Flag Relay 2018 will start at 6 a.m. at QOC Winter Camp in Sealine with the endurance team from Al Shaqab before the flag flies on a small plane to Qatar Racing Club. After that, the flag's journey continues through several stops, including Hamad International Airport where flagbearers walk with the flag before the Guinness World Record in cycling is attempted. The ultimate stop for Flag Relay 2018 is at Qatar Football National Team Club from which flagbearers will walk to Aspire Park where the journey concludes with raising of the flag and a series of fun activities in celebration of Qatar National Day.
