Adventure lovers have been exploring a range of exciting new water sports that have kept the waters at The Pearl-Qatar busy throughout the winter and spring seasons with activities like stand up paddling, water skiing, kayaking, drag racing, fishing and boating.

Charged with the management of The Pearl-Qatar’s three world-class marinas, Ronautica Middle East (RME), a wholly-owned subsidiary of United Development Company (UDC), has been staging a number of water activities all season long, capitalizing on The Pearl-Qatar’s waterside location and upscale marina services.

“We at Ronautica encourage various sporting activities and offer a perfect mix of water sports venue and high-end facilities,” Steve Stiglbauer, RME General Manager, said. “These activities play an important part in improving human health, developing relationships with others and strengthening bonds between people of different cultures.”

He added, “With its pleasant waters, safe beaches and world-class equipment, The Pearl-Qatar represents an ideal location for those types of water activities.”

The Open Water Paddling monthly series held from January until June is one of the avenues to relax and enjoy the Island’s waterfront aspect, creating an exciting sport ambiance for residents of all ages. Every third Friday of each month is now transformed into an awesome day of standup paddling, kayaking and water skiing, not to forget an enjoyable beach time for families and onlookers.

Stand up paddling is a rapidly growing new sport. It offers fun, fitness and a fabulously scenic way to get around on the water. Races are set in the picturesque waterways and beach of the colorful Qanat Quartier where the water is flat, making it perfect to practice and race.

While paddling is considered a low impact sport, drag racing represents a tougher and more competitive form of exercise which is entertaining to practice or watch from Porto Arabia’s Boardwalk. A five-round series, the Qatar Drag Race Championship is regularly hosted by The Pearl-Qatar and attracts the cream of the Qatar and the Gulf’s aqua bike racers in four different categories: Stock, Super Stock, Open and Freestyle.

In a move aimed at engaging its marina clients, Ronautica Middle East has also designed activities targeting berth holders. These include a fishing tournament scheduled for April 12 and a boat trip on April 25. The fishing contest will see fishing enthusiasts compete over catching the heaviest, longest and rarest fish in separate categories ending the day with valuable prizes and a full fish container to take back home for dinner.

In the week following the fishing contest, all berth holders will be invited to sail their boats, of ten meters and larger, and travel together as a group to an offshore island, Shrao’h Island, 65 km SE of Doha, to enjoy sandy beaches and some good company with other high-spirited boaters.

A boating enthusiast himself, Adel Al- Muhannadi, RME Harbor Master, recognizes that boating, fishing and other water sports are fun in their own right. “Following the positive responses we have been receiving from our marina clients, Ronautica is planning to launch an exciting new yacht club format and to open and operate two major fuel piers to better satisfy current berth holders and to aid in attracting new clients,” he said.
