If you're new to drifting, it's time to tell you about this extreme sport that's taking the world for a spin! Drifting is an extreme sport where the driver of a car intentionally steers too much, causing the car's tires to lose their grip on the road. It's a sport that's all about control over the car.
Drifting involves using the clutch, throttle, steering input and gear shifting so the car goes into a state of oversteer as the driver manoeuvres it from turn to turn. The driver controls this state of oversteer making sure the car continues to drift until its turn is done. (Red Bull; Driftworks)
Note: Please do not try drifting in an unsupervised environment. Make sure to practice in designated areas only.
Lebanon was the first-ever country that hosted the Red Bull Car Park Drift in 2008 at the City Mall car park, but drifting goes back decades to the 1960s when some racers in Japan set out to the winding Japanese mountains to increase their speed time.
This today has evolved into a new sport and drifting has become so mainstream, people have their cars custom-built for the sport, with new obstacles and objectives being added to the game, new challenging courses and plenty of awesome drifting action!
And, now in 2021, the Red Bull Car Park Drift is back in Qatar.
2010 was the year the Red Bull Car Park Drift made it to Qatar for the first time and it was an instant hit, especially since motorsport is one of the most favoured sports disciplines in the country. Khalifa Al Attiyah was the first 'King of Drift' in Qatar after the brilliant show he put down for the audience.
In 2015, Mohammad Al Khayat was crowned Qatar’s 'King of Drift' after some serious drifting action at the Losail Circuit Sports Club, and Abdo Feghali made a return to the event after a hiatus of five years. 6,000 spectators watched the encounter of 10 drifters who showed their international level skills and enthralled everyone, under the patronage of the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation.
In 2016, Abdelrahman Fakhroo was crowned the 'King of Drift' after a gruelling duel with a bunch of other drifters along with plenty of road crunching and rubber burning at the Dallah Park located on the Corniche.
In 2017, Dallah Parking was the venue for the Red Bull Car Park drift where 20 amateur drifters showed the audience their tricks on the tarmac with Abdelrahman Fakhroo winning the competition to become the 'King of Drift'.
In 2018, the Red Bull Car Park Drift made a comeback at the Losail Circuit Sports Club. It was a weekend of tire action and rubber on tarmac, with Mohamad Al Khayat being crowned champion in his BMW M2 from amongst 25 drifters.
The event is free for spectators, and by invite only to media and friends of Red Bull. Only people who are vaccinated and have a green EHTERAZ status will be allowed to enter. Masks are mandatory and so is social distancing.
It'll be an adrenaline-pumping event that you just have to be at. The thrilling adventures in the car park will have you sitting at the edge of your seats and wondering what's going to happen next!
Like all sports, this one comes with its own set of rules.
