Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) today held its annual ceremony (Sports Excellence Day) in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al -Thani and President of Qatar Olympic Committee H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al -Thani.

The ceremony, held at Msheireb, saw the honouring of athletes and distinguished administrators personalities and institutions supporting sport.

H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al -Thani said in his speech at the ceremony: "We meet you again on the day of sports excellence, an annual date in order to honour the constellation of achievement and excellence of athletes, administrators and sports support institutions in the State of Qatar".

His Excellency added that "an event that Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) is keen to hold every year to celebrate and honour all those who contributed to the advancement of Qatari sports, and to refer the words of appreciation due to those outstanding who have retained their achievement and tournament records retained their titles."

His Excellency continued: "We thank H.H. the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al -Thani for full support and comprehensive care for sports and athletes in the country."

H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al -Thani said that 2019 was a distinguished year in the history of sports in Qatar, which witnessed unprecedented achievements, perhaps the most notable coronation of the Qatar national football team (Adaam) of the Asian Cup for the first time in the history of Qatari football, a coronation surrounded by exceptional circumstances made it more difficult but at the same time increased the its value and symbolism.

His Excellency pointed out that it is one of the timeless moments of excellence in this year also the moment of the crowning of our champion Motaz Barsham with gold medal in the world athletics championship 2019 hosted by Doha and also the moment of the crowning of our champion Abdulrahman Samba with bronze medal in the same championship as well as the development witnessed by the Qatari women's sport in sports the external forums .

H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani stressed that these honorable achievements and good results of our champions in the sports forums were a success of God first and then the fruit of perseverance and determination and the mighty work of the supervision and training teams and administrative officials in various sports bodies.

His Excellency said that the Qatari sports institutions had also achieved commendable successes at the organizational level by hosting two major international sporting events in Doha: the World Athletics Championship 2019, which was held for the first time in the Middle East and the World Beach Games of the National Olympic Committee in its first edition, which was a challenge as a decision of its hosting was made in a short period of time before its launch and the two events had been very successful, reinforcing Qatar's leading position in the global sporting arena.

"As we share the joy of what we have accomplished and take a look at what we have injected, our eyes look forward to the future and our minds evoke our future goals and plans to consider the challenges ahead.", H.E. Sheikh Joaan said.

His Excellency noted that these are major challenges, especially the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020). In Qatar, His Excellency added, "Our sporting ambition is moving - in its rising direction - with guidance, foresight, strategic planning, and with the inspiration and support of our wise leadership that has set the stage and set an example.

Concluding, H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani extended thanks to all those who contribute to the development of Qatari sports, and urged to do more to continue the process of success and achievement, especially in light of the challenges ahead.

President of the Qatar Olympic Committee H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al -Thani distributed the awards to the honorees on this year's Sports Excellence Day. The Ministry of Interior was awarded the Best Distinguished Governmental department in support of the Olympic Movement, Katara Cultural Village and Aspire as best distinguished institutions in supporting sports and organizing community sports programs, while Al-Kass TV won the media partner award.
