Men’s Handball World Championship Organising Committee took part in the 116th Philippines Independence Day celebrations in Qatar this week, as part of the process of recruiting thousands of volunteers for the milestone sports event.

Beginning on 15 January 2015, the 24th Men’s Handball World Championship is set to leave a lasting legacy for the annual sports event, with 24 teams competing and fans from around the world in attendance.

In order to deliver a world-class event offering a unique fan experience at the heart of Qatar, the committee is reaching out to the countries diverse community to participate in the volunteers programme. Volunteers will act as an essential point of contact for sports fans and visitors, both in the run-up to and during the event.

Thousands of families took part in the Independence Day celebrations, which ran throughout the day and hosted a number of performances and exhibitions.

The Qatar 2015 stand, provided an opportunity for people to learn more about the Championship, and the range of opportunities to participate, played an active role in the event, hosting both the Philippines Ambasador H.E. Cresente Relacion and popular Filipino actor Leo Martinez.

In addition to the information stand, Qatar 2015 also hosted a special Handball Showcase, to engage the community and enable them to experience the speed and precision of the game. 900 people took part in the activities and were able to throw a handball and measure the speed and accuracy of their shot, with the best throws winning a special prize.

There was also a social media contest, where people could win tickets to the 24th Men’s Handball World Championship by posting images with the hashtag #Selfie2015 and #Qatar2015.

Qatar 2015 is in the process of launching a series of initiatives to attract volunteers from across the community. It will shortly open a special Volunteers Centre in Doha, so that people can easily find out more information and sign up.
