A momentous record was broken on the ultimate day of the 12th FINA World Swimming Championships – Doha when the championships clocked up an incredible 18 world records broken across the five days of the event, more than any other FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) before it.

The Local Organising Committee has made good on its promise to deliver an exciting event for fans in Doha and around the world by putting the athlete experience first and giving them the perfect environment in which to perform at their very best.

The previous mark of 17 world records broken during a FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) was set by Manchester in 2008 and was surpassed by Doha in the first race of morning heats today when the Netherlands took the top spot in the women’s 4x50m freestyle relay.

Maud Van Der Meer is confident the team can beat their own record again tonight in the final, saying, “We looked at the previous world record times set by Denmark before our race and we knew we could achieve it. Tonight we expect to go much faster.”

With South Africa’s Chad Le Clos going for gold in the men’s 200m butterfly tonight, having already set a World Record in the 100m butterfly, and Katinka Hosszu who has taken four world records herself this meet also swimming tonight, Doha could further propel itself to the top of the leader board.

Hamad Aquatic Centre has proved itself as one of the world’s best facilities on a global stage, as hundreds of millions of sports fans around the world played witness to swimming’s top stars producing world-leading performances under its conditions.

The 12th FINA World Swimming Championships is playing out in spectacular fashion in the capital with 18 World Records and countless Championship Records set already, creating electric atmospheres and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to witness historic sporting moments.
