Excitement has begun to mount as Qatar gears up to host the UCI Road World Championships — Doha 2016 on its shores for the very first time in one month’s time. It is a moment of great pride, as this is the first time the prestigious tournament is travelling to the Middle East.

To celebrate the major ‘One Month To Go’ milestone, Sheikh Khalid bin Ali Al Thani, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, and children from around the capital city came together at the iconic Aspire Zone to celebrate the major countdown milestone, the ‘One Month To Go’.

Sheikh Khalid said: “We are proud to be organising the world’s most prestigious cycling competition for the first time in the Middle East, thus confirming the reputation of Qatar as a destination for major sport events, after it had proven its organizational capabilities in various team and individual sports.

“The UCI has placed its confidence in the Qatari Cycling Federation to host this world event after the numerous years of success in hosting the Tour of Qatar for men as well as for women.”

Speaking to media outside the world-famous Aspire Dome, Sheikh Khalid said the competition would pass through some of the city’s most iconic locations, showcasing Qatar to a global audience.

“Cycling events are well known for contributing to the promotion of the sites of the countries they run through. This major event will be an opportunity to make people all over the world know more about the beauty of our country, especially as the course of the competition will mainly go through the streets of the Pearl-Qatar.”

“The course of the races will also pass by famous locations in the city of Doha, such as Education City, which features famous international universities, the Aspire Zone with its iconic sport venues, and the sport complex of Lusail

Sheikh Khalid continued: “By organising the UCI Road World Championships – Doha 2016 on our shores, we also promise to do everything in our powers to promote the wonderful sport, not only in Qatar, but around the region as well.

“We promise you an extraordinary eight days of competition, featuring some of the world’s best junior and senior, male and female riders. Join us and together, let’s make this event an unforgettable success.”

The eight-day event begins on October 9, and will see the world’s top cyclists in action. A total of 12 titles, including in junior and senior categories, will be decided during competition.
