Newly-appointed Qatar National Team Head Coach Jorge Fossati has faith in the team, and said progressing to the 2018 World Cup qualifying finals in Russia was “still possible.”
Fossati spoke today at a press conference for the first time since his return to the national team’s helm, having previously coached them in the past. He was still coaching the Al-Rayyan football team on Friday and was given his new position over the weekend. Fossati had guided Al Rayyan towards the Qatar Stars League title for the first time in two decades last season.
“It’s an honor to be back as coach of the Qatar national team. I believe in the quality of our players,” Fossati said. "After the two bad results [in the final round] the qualification for the World Cup is still possible, but it’s very, very difficult.”
Qatar, who lost against Iran (0-2) and Uzbekistan (0-1), is currently at the bottom of the six-team Group A. The two setbacks led the Qatar Football Association to terminate the contract of Uruguayan Daniel Carreno as coach, and appoint his compatriot Fossati on a contract until May, 2018.

“I’m optimistic. I believe in Qatar’s possibilities. My predecessor Carreno made a good job and we’re going to enjoy part of that,” said Fossati.
Qatar will take face South Korea and Syria on October 6 and 11. It will be difficult, but not impossible, Fossati said on facing South Korea and their rising star player, Son Heung-min.
“I am here because I believe in Qatar’s chances. It will be a difficult way, but there is a big dream of the Qatari people, which is bigger than our target,” Fossati said.
