Reuters and New York Times reported FIFA is considering some of the 2022 World Cup matches to be held at Oman and Kuwait if the tournament is expanded from 32 to 48 teams.

The World Cup is planned to expand to 48 teams in 2026 but FIFA president Gianni Infantino has proposed the enlarged format to begin from 2022.

Qatar has said it will not take a decision on expanding the tournament until it sees the details of a feasibility study from FIFA while a deep political rift in the Gulf complicates the prospects of sharing the competition.

A final call on the idea was expected to be made next week but Infantino has decided to move the final decision to FIFA’s annual Congress in June, where he is standing unopposed for re-election.

World soccer’s ruling body did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

What do you think of this news? Hosting some games at Oman and Kuwait would be beneficial for Qatar and 2022 World Cup?
