Big-hitting John Daly teams up with Andy Gray, Gordon Strachan and Chris Coleman to win tournament curtain-raiser at Doha Golf Club
Two-time major winner John Daly led his team of football legends to victory in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters Pro-Am at the Doha Golf Club.
Daly’s teammates on the Al Jazeera team comprised Scotland manager Gordon Strachan, his former Scotland teammate Andy Gray and current Wales manager Chris Coleman. All three played for their countries for a decade or more.
The combination of the colourful 47-year-old American and the British footballers clearly worked, as the quartet won the Pro-Am with a medal score of 24-under-par, edging Alvaro Quiros’ team, Apollo Young Guns, on a countback.
Brett Rumford led CBQ Team 6, one of six sides from tournament title sponsor Commercial Bank, to third place with a score of 22-under.
Former World No. 1 Luke Donald, 15-time European Tour winner Thomas Bjorn, Irishman Shane Lowry and Chris Wood, defending champion at this week’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, each led their teams to a score of 19-under.
Prizes were awarded at a lavish Pro-Am Dinner hosted by The St Regis Doha, the tournament’s Official Hotel.
The Pro-Am, which featured 40 teams, is the traditional curtain-raiser for the star-studded European Tour event, which will tee-off on Wednesday and finish on Saturday.
Other big names at the US$2.5 million event include World No. 3 Henrik Stenson, World No. 11 Sergio Garcia, PGA Championship winner Jason Dufner, four-time major winner Ernie Els and former World No. 1 Martin Kaymer.
The 2014 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters runs from Wednesday 22 January to Saturday 25 January. Evening entertainment will begin from 6pm on Thursday and Friday. Both single-day (Thursday/Friday) and season tickets include entry to the concerts, which include American performers Divas of Soul on Thursday and Scottish band Texas on Friday.
