Aspire Zone Foundation launches the first edition of the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 50km World Championship. The championship is officially accredited by the IAU and will be hosted by Aspire Zone annually through to 2017.

Featuring more than 100 of the world’s best ultrarunners, as selected by their respective national federations, strong competition is expected for the championship title.

Starting at 6pm, the race runs through until midnight. Winners will be formally announced during a closing ceremony, which will be held on Saturday December 5th, 2015 at the Torch Hotel.

Aspire Zone will also host the third edition of the “Aspire International 6:50 Race” which takes place during the IAU international race weekend. This unique event gives local enthusiasts the opportunity to run alongside IAU professional ultrarunners. It will also feature an athletes’ village where participants can register, warm up, cool down as well as meet with race organisers, media and others taking part.

The Aspire International 6:50 Race consists of a 50km, 10-lap journey across Aspire for individuals or teams made up of five members. Each lap is 5km long, with competitors required to complete the race within six hours. Categories in the Aspire International 6:50 race include: Open Race Male/Female, and Open and Relay Team Male/Female/Mix.

Mr. Abdullah Al Khater, Events Manager at Aspire Zone Foundation, said: “Qatar has become a popular destination for major sports events and athletes from around the world. Hosting the 50km World Championships and the Aspire International 6:50 race reflects international confidence in the reputation of Qatari sports organisations to successfully manage world championships. Aspire Zone Foundation’s skilled team and world-class facilities make it the ideal location to host both this year’s event as well as the next two editions.”

Mr. Nadeem Khan, IAU Director of Communications, said: “We are extremely excited to be hosting our landmark 50km world championships at the Aspire Zone. This is the first year of a three-year commitment to host the event, and we along with all our athletes are looking forward to benefiting from the world-class facilities at Aspire and the excellent management that the organisation is known for. It promises to be an exciting race on December 4th, and we look forward to seeing as many people there as possible.”
