Al Sadd clinched a spot in the quarterfinals of HH the Amir Cup 2020 after a 3-1 win over Al Kharaitiyat in the Round of 16 game played on Thursday at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium.
Starting strongly, Al-Sadd made an early impact through Abdelkarim Hassan who broke the deadlock within the first minute, heading in after Hashim Ali sent in a great cross from the right.
Al Kharaitiyat were then handed an opportunity to level the scores in the 14th minute, when the referee awarded them a penalty for a foul by Hamed Ismail in the box. However, Rachid Tiberkanine's spot kick crashed off the post and the score stayed at 1-0.
Six minutes later, however, Tiberkanine managed to equalize, this time through a free-kick from the edge of the box.
Al-Sadd soon restored their one-goal advantage, with Baghdad Bounedjah scoring in the 25th minute. Ali Asad deftly lifted the ball into the box for Bounedjah, who headed in past Al-Kharaitiyat keeper Shehab Mamdouh.
The first half thus ended with Al Sadd leading 2-1. Right after the break, Salem Al Hajri thought he hade made it 3 when he scored in the 48th minute but the referee ruled the effort out for a foul in the build up, after a VAR review.
Midway through the second half, Al Sadd coach Xavi Hernandez brought on Nam Tae-hee and Akram Afif, in place of Abdulaziz Al Ansari and Yasir Abubakar, as the Wolves looked to score another goal to secure the result.
That goal arrived in the 82nd minute, after Afif crossed from the left for Bounedjah to control and tap in from close range, as Al Sadd confirmed their 3-1 win and progression to the quarterfinals.
