Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine (N-KOM) was welcomed by The Youth Company – a local not-for-profit social enterprise, at the Hamad Medical City for an iftar with the elderly. The event took place on Monday 21st July, aiming to connect N-KOM staff with the patients at Enaya – Specialized Care Center.
Around 30 of the shipyard’s staff were involved in the iftar event, as well as patients, youth volunteers and the nurses at the center. A programme orientation was delivered by TYC and Enaya’s experienced staff to all volunteers prior to the start of the event. The volunteers – which were divided into two groups – got an opportunity to set-up the space with furniture, organize catering, prepare gifts and communicate with the patients to achieve a successful collaborative iftar.
“The patients at Enaya are the ones that strongly need human presence and delegate care for them. It is always exciting for the patients to meet and greet with different individuals from different backgrounds. Such events give them a feeling of care in the community for them” – said one of the members of the team at Enaya – which is a recently launched residential care center for long term disabled individuals.
While some patients were able to participate in iftar, most of them were visited by the volunteers after iftar to their rooms. The volunteers were split into 3 groups to explore and visit each room of the three floors of the center. Each group with a specific group name and an appointed group leader distributed gift boxes and flowers to the patients, while some stayed in the rooms for a longer time to have conversations with the patients.
Emphasizing on the importance of community engagement, CEO of N-KOM Mr Abu Bakar Mohd Nor said, “N-KOM is pleased to be working with TYC on this noble initiative during the holy month of Ramadan. At N-KOM, we believe that everyone has a role to play in making a difference to the community and actively participate in community initiatives as part of our robust corporate social responsibility programme. It is through such events that we learn to better appreciate the society we live in and foster the spirit of compassion and responsibility.”
The three-hour long event concluded with certificates of appreciation presented to the volunteers, while all participants received gift bags from The Youth Company. The food leftovers from the event, with the help of TYC members, were packed and handed-out to labourers working at different locations around Doha.
Commenting on the success of the event, Mohamed Farid – Chairman & Founder of The Youth Company said “At TYC, we strive to encourage our partners with the activities we do, so they can experience our services hands-on. We are proud to announce this as our second successful event with N-KOM in Qatar, and we look forward to more such initiatives together”.
The iftar event was done as a part of TYC’s ongoing ‘7asanat Olympics’ program, which aims to encourage volunteering and community engagement during the holy month of Ramadan.
