Drinking-water

Some of us might not feel thirsty during the day or we get so focused on something that we forget to drink enough water. This needs to change as the summer heat in Qatar is impacting us in ways we might not even realise. One of those impacts is dehydration. A way to avoid dehydration is by increasing our water intake during the summer.

Here are six (easily achievable) ways to help you remember to drink more water.

1. Carry a reusable water bottle wherever you go.

Knowing that you have water available with you everywhere will surely remind you to drink more water. The first step would be buying a thermal bottle (stop using plastic bottles; they are so bad for the environment) which is ideal to keep water cool during the hot climate. This can also help you keep track of your water intake by knowing how many times you drank the whole bottle in a day. Thermal bottles can be found in local grocery stores and Virgin Megastore. If you don't want to carry around a bottle, consider using the public water fountains that can be found in a number of public places like the various malls in Qatar and in parks dotted around the country.

2. Download an application that sends you alerts

For those of you who don’t feel thirsty often or forget to drink water all together, download an app to help you out. Apps like My Water Balance help you keep track of your water intake and send you alerts to drink more water. If you are looking for something a little more engaging, the app Plant Nanny gives you a plant that feeds off the water you drink daily. The plant stays healthy if you drink the appropriate amount of water every day and the app sends you alerts whenever it (a.k.a you) needs water.

3. Count the number of glasses you drink everyday

The general consensus is 8 -10 glasses of water per day, but the amount of water intake may also vary from person to person and it's important to find the right minimum for you. For example, you'll need to drink more water than usual if you exercise. It's probably best to set a goal to achieve every day which can help you feel accomplished, too. A great tip to follow is that after you finish a glass of water, refill it so you're ready for the next one. Your skin will thank you for this, especially in Qatar's heat.

4. Add ice to dilute sugary drinks

Whenever you're out with friends during the summer and crave a sweet drink, add ice to dilute the sweetness and slightly increase your water intake. This might not be for everyone, but it'll surely freshen up your drinks. It's also a good hack if a drink is too sweet for your liking; just add ice!

5. Add fruits in your water

Adding flavour to your water is another way to help you increase your intake! Add slices of lemon, cucumber, mint or any other fruits can add natural flavours. Many people think drinking tea or coffee can replace water intake but it is not true! Certain teas work similar as water but most of them has caffein and it actually take away your water level from body.

6. Eat water-rich foods

Drinking water won’t solve all our problems but something that can help in fighting dehydration is eating water-rich foods. For example, fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, zucchini, lettuce, grapefruit, strawberries and watermelon all serve the purpose. The best part is that they are easily available at your nearest grocery store here in Qatar.
